"Open Wounds" should be pretty much self explanatory. These are the stories about injustices that have been heaped upon Brothers and Sisters on the job by those in management who've forgotten what it's like - or more likely were Firefighters in name only while on their quest to a seat in the marble palace. "F-I-N-O" or Firefighter In Name Only! MUTT will work too.
It would seem that some find it easer to hide their head's inside an NFPA 1500 Manual, forsaking the lives and families that we hold dear.

TEAM: This subject recently came up with a person who is knowledgeable in the ways of the dreaded DOT physical. During a DOT physical, the Dr. is not even allowed to ask 'if' you are on meds or 'what' they are unless their presence is evident in your blood work.

You think that's the doc's finger? It' not. It's Big Bird screwing you another way. Be very careful what you say when talking to this doc. Getting in his face or flat refusing to answer his questions could be dismissal grounds. Since they're using our own standards against us it would be difficult to win a suit against our own standards. Another case where winning by the union at the bargaining table is twisted into covert retaliation by the city. Never give up the physicals at the bargaining table. The administering of the physical is what's improper not the standards. The physicals are too important for the health and safety of the members (when done properly).

They resent blue shirts, so they occasionally pluck somebody out of the sad huddled masses and turn them into humans. HQ doesnt care what happens to those in blue, they only really care about officers. Lieutenants are sort of in the middle ground, and it is difficult for them to ride the fence. Thats what makes it a lousy job. If you don't believe me go look in your locker for your official club hat. You dont have one. Hats and dress uniforms are only for the worthy. They even give staff officers more life insurance because the cityvalues their lives more than the boys (and gals) in blue. There. Feel better now? Now go clean the station, shit boy.
Received via Email 3-6-07 Here's a little history lesson...Back in the day you came to work and put on your uniform. You weren't allowed to wear it to and from. The uniform for roll call was gray shirt and gray pants. That was what you wore up until 5:00 when you would change into your blues. Blue pants, gray shirt, (long sleeve in the winter...short in the summer.)and a black tie. That's right, a tie. Now if your crew was gonna do some inspections or other task that involved the public during the day this was the process. Put on your grays when you get to work. Lt. says your going inspecting at 10:00. At 9:45 you change to the dress uniform. When you leave the station you'll also be wearing a hat. And you better have it on. When you return for lunch you change back to your grays. You eat lunch and that afternoon you have hydrant checks. Back into your blues with your ties and hats. When you get back from that little task it's back into your grays until 5:00 when you again change into your blues for watching TV (which was only allowed after 5:00) and for working at fires that came in after dark. If it was after 8:30 you could get away with just wearing your bunker gear if you had been in bed. However if you were up watching TV you worked the fire in your blue uniform with tie under your bunker gear.
Times have changed and for the better. Don't ever complain about those shorts and T shirts. And for goodness sake be thankful that you no longer have to wear the "club hat". Just a little reminder that things aren't sometimes as bad as you think. We complained about having to wear the dress blues after 5:00. The chief at that time said he wanted us to look professional when dealing with the public.

But even when the lives and futures of all of us are under attack there are those who just can't help but show their ass on this site. While the rest of us were paying close attention to our future, Mr. Hurts was busying himself with thinking up demeaning dialog to describe his feelings about something that had nothing to do with him. When I posted my comments on uniform changes it was in response to the post from 3/6/07 Number 2 that read: "Thats what makes it a lousy job. My post was not intended to be anything but a look at what the current members are missing and the "hat" was what triggered it. You don't hang hose. You don't mow grass. You don't paint. You don't do a lot of things that are a part of the tradition of the fire service that I lived. Oooops, I'm sorry. From what I know about him through other people, is that he is a good firefighter but one of the biggest racist's on the job and he doesnt pay back swap. Do you not think they are trying to get us fighting amongst each other so they can really hammer us. Lets all stick together and show them we are going to stick together and fight for what we believe is right - better pay, work hours, and pension. If we remain unified we can get things accomplished. Lets come up with some ideas how to accomplish our mission rather than waste our time hammering each other like we have been doing for years. Don't let the city spend their money on a union buster like Gonzales, lets make them spend it on a worthy cause - Public Safety or better yet Fire/EMS service delivery. TEAM: Good points all. But... All of the bickering that goes on in the cyberworld doesn't amount to a hill of beans. In the case of the existence of the daily machinations that go on, on these pages - the TEAM thinks it has a cathartic effect.
What does and 'should' matter is that we all pay close attention to the concerted effort that this city has put towards funding every pet project they feel gives them the best return on their investment in the eyes of the neighborhoods. Look at the city's website. It's all about the neighborhoods! As difficult as it may sound, we all need to be participants in the process. There needs to be a small gaggle of like minded individuals (that's us) who join their neighborhood association's in their fire station's neighborhood. This is grassroots activism at it best and it's where most - if not all of this city's future leaders are spawned. Joining is easy. Answering the first question is easier... "I live 1/3 or my entire adult working life at the fire station in this neighborhood!" You don't need to bang the drum about the issues that plague this department. Neighbors are naturally inquisitive and want to know about their investment in public safety. I would venture to bet that this is but one of the small directives that this Local will offer up in the future to it's members as a means to mitigate our 'diminutive' voice amongst the neighborhood associations.

We were also told that we would be there as a show piece and were not to speak on the issues. The administration is afraid of what we have to say. They are afraid that if the public, (the voting public) actually knew what is happening with public safety in their city they would be appalled. The cops come out and say they have staffing issues for special events, what about the staffing issues during the overnight hours? What about staffing levels on our ladder trucks? Or does it not count because they are not really ladder trucks right now. It's obvious that council wants to act and remain ignorant "like a 5th grader" (Foster's words, not mine) on all the important issues. Maybe its time to show the public that they are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to THEIR well staffed fire department.

According to the raw numbers which you refer to, they ran 3,500 ems calls and 500 fire calls in 2006 (round numbers). However, if you take individual runs, engine 6 ran 2,500 calls. Rescue 6 stil. ran 3,500 (they also picked up a few calls in the that 500 number that was left over, but not much)). In other words, engine 6 ran a lot of ems calls either assisting rescue, running as first responder, car wrecks (which are coded as ems) and other misc runs. Rescue 6 still ran about 3 more calls per shift, which is significant, but not the stretch that your statistics show. Rob Edwards (formerly of the BIG 6)

I came on in 2002 in my group of 9 there were only 2 minorities. There was a group after me. In that group there were on 14 firefighters 1 black (TR#11) and 2 woman (TB,JA). In the last five yrs we have hired over I would say 50 firefighters and 10 of those firefighters were black (FS#3C, JV#5B, TR#11C, LM#10B, LW#9, DS#11B, OLIVER (A SHIFT PROBIE)WILLIE( A SHIFT PROBIE) and the 2 new hires. The Woman TB#1C, JA#6C, SS#1A, LW#9, A SHIFT PROBIE,JM#8B PROBIE. One other young lady that decided to go to HFR. 7 woman out of 50 firefighters. You show me where the minoritys are getting the jobs. What I hate about this that you come in here and spew this crap about the minoritys being hired and those numbers right there show the disparity. Why is there so much disparity in these numbers? This fire department has was more racist to hiring minoritys before we came on so what do you think those numbers were like then. It was a 1 to 10 ratio. Wow us minoritys have moved up to a whooping 2 to 10 ratio and you come in here and try to pit the other white firefighters against us to say that its our fault why things are messed up. I met several Charleston firefighters a few years ago when my father was injured there in a building collapse. They did an amazing job triaging my father's incident, so I am certain that whatever could have been done for these unfortunate heroes was done well, even under the worst of conditions.
Losing anyone to a fire is the realization of our worst nightmares. I can't imagine the pain for a community, it's families, and particularly it's surviving firefighters as they come to grips with the loss of 9 of their own. Let's all be sure to take a moment to be grateful to still be among those that love us, and to still be working alongside men and women who would sacrifice their lives for yours and mine.

Several dozen active and retired firefighters along with Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin from the DC Fire Department attended the memorial service in Charleston S.C yesterday (6/22) for the nine firefighters, who died in the of duty Monday night at a building fire in Charleston.
Over 10,000 firefighters throughout country filled the North Charleston Coliseum as Mayor Joseph P. Riley, of Charleston, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff and Charleston Fire Chief Russell R. Thomas Jr. praised the nine firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice on Monday night.
As the nine caskets of the fallen firefighters were loaded in the hearses one by one, firefighters stood at attention.
With members of the Department looking on, Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin gave a check in the amount of $45.000.00 to Chief Thomas.

Several friends and family asked if I was able to go, and if not, how many did we send. NOT 1!!!!! Over 10,000 firefighters from across the country attended this service and not one had an SPFR patch on their sleeve. That is absolutely pathetic. I won't even wear a any type of fd tee shirt in public at this time because of the "sorry to hear about your fallen brothers in Carolina" comments knowing that our Accredited - nationally known - largest department in the county is too fu**ing cheap to honor our fallen brothers. Talk about a kick in the ass. Right after 9/11, our Local had a boot drive and collected over $250,000.00 for that cause. I don't recall what SPFR did. Maybe someone could enlighten me. Oh wait- I think they let us wear our uniforms off duty for the Baseball game/Dome event.

The sight of the FDNY and their bagpipers, the best there is, in force all the while knowing one of thier brothers died the day before back in Brooklyn. We all left from South Carolina and headed home, some had to get off the bus to work a tour and others got on and headed straight to new york city for another funeral.
You have to want to do this for our fallen. You cant wait for your city to send you, pull together as a group, as a brotherhood and do it yourselves. Our union paid for the buses, we paid for the food and refreshments. Money well spent to honor the fallen. A D.C. firefighter died while on duty early yesterday morning of a suspected heart attack — the department's first on-duty loss in eight years.
Firefighter James McRae III, 34, started complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing about 12:30 a.m. yesterday, fire department spokesman Alan Etter said.
Mr. McRae, a tillerman on Truck 12 at Engine 20 on Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest, was taken to Sibley Memorial Hospital, where it was determined that he was having a heart attack. He then was taken in a Medevac helicopter to Washington Hospital Center, where he died around 4:30 a.m., Mr. Etter said.
Mr. McRae, a nearly 16-year veteran of the department, was not known to previously have suffered any medical problems, Mr. Etter said.
"He never experienced any kind of cardiac problem," he said. "He seemed fine. He was always smiling. He always had a good word to say."
The highest percentage of on-duty firefighter fatalities in the U.S. are due to sudden cardiac death, according to a recent study published by the National Fire Protection Association. Of the 89 U.S. firefighter deaths last year, 34 were caused by sudden cardiac death, according to an association report.
"Sudden cardiac death, most often the result of heart attack, is typically the leading nature of injury and usually accounts for close to half of the total on-duty deaths," the report said.
"This is a job that's very physically demanding, and it's emotionally demanding, which adds to a level of stress that can negatively impact people," Mr. Etter said.
McRae responded to some medical emergencies and a fire alarm Friday night, Mr. Etter said.
His death is considered an on-duty death under a U.S. Department of Justice program that provides benefits to families of public-safety officials who are killed in the line of duty or die of a heart attack or stroke within 24 hours of a public-service act.
Mr. McRae has a 9-year-old daughter. His mother and father live in the District, Mr. Etter said.
The department has not yet finalized plans for a memorial service, Mr. Etter said.
"We're still shaken by what happened," he said. "This is very jarring."
The last D.C. firefighter died on duty in June 1999, Mr. Etter said. That year, three firefighters died while on duty, he said.

I agree. Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for this man and appreciate all he has done for this department, but it might be time to slow it down a little. I don't believe this had anything to do with the honor guard incident. Regardless, the station he was moved to has an opening and needs a person with his qualifications. If they can take multiple vehicles out of service for something as lame as an officers meeting, then they can shut them down for manpower. Everybody else in the city has an overtime ROTATION. Even our own beloved inspection division knows when to expect OT. A few guys have already had the balls to say no, and have never been jammed up for it. Just say no.

Received via Email 9-30-07 The A shift at #3 asked a training Lt. if he would assist them in acquiring gloves to test so the department, as a whole, would benefit. The station captain was made aware of the testing after the gloves were received.
Fact: The station test is available for all to see and is given to all three shifts. The A shift doesn't do anything differently than we do on the C shift. In fact, if an official asked to see the test in question, they will find that creative grading was done in order for the probie to pass.
Fact: The poster of the departments black firefighters, visible at #8, sends a racist signal. The department's administration should check with city legal before more than these comments are made.

If they were having real problems on the job like you say they were then how are they passing their monthly test or the JATC test. How come their evaluations dont reflect that.

Received via Email 10-02-07 I can't speak to all of the questions posed, but I can post a couple of thoughts that I have gathered throughout my years of working with and observing probies coming on the job as well as a few other probabally insignificant points.....First off, I believe that probies are treated better than they have ever been treated. They are coddled and have their hands held throughout the whole year. If someone doesn't talk to you, move on to someone who will. I did not come from another Department, this was my first. From my first day on the job, I wanted to work hard and gain the trust and respect of those that I worked with. I wasn't concerned with everything being equal. I understood that I was the new guy (in fact there were several people on my shift who I was convinced thought that my name was "new guy". I was OK with this. I sucked it up, did some extra work and I knew that they were watching how I responded. Eventually, I worked myself into being equal. Second, I am pretty sure that as of a couple of years ago, every station test is the same on all three shifts for each station. I am also pretty confident that this came as a result of some cry baby asshole failing a test and saying that it was unfair because the other probie on the other shift had a different test. I am also under the impression that training has a copy of all of the station tests and they have reviewed them all prior to the first test being given. I have to say that I am also pretty sick of all this racial bullshit being thrown around here. Yes there is a poster of black firefighters at station 8. If you don't like it, don't look. Yes there is an old poster of white firefighters at the MFS. If you don't like it, don't look. I have worked with great people that are male and female, white and black. I have also worked with assholes both male and female, white and black. If you're and asshole, it's not because you are white, black, male, female, new guy or senior....It's just because you are an asshole. Don't be offended, just quit being an asshole.

This Capt. went up against admin, from Callahan, to the cities big money people. Putting them in the middle of the swamp that those members have to work in, and be sick for a day or two after their shift. Showing council members just how bad it is in St. Petersburg's furthest south station. I honestly do not know who or what put up that poster. I have mixed feelings about it too. Some on the job use it as a ---- card, while some view it as proof of past wrongs turned around. Arrogant, full of myself, and not willing to be part of anything. Calling me names is just part of your defense mechanism and I take no offence at your juvenile tactics. You obviously think you're made to perfection and your ideas and attitude are representative or what everyone's should be. I'm sorry. You're wrong. I'm the professional on this job and you're not. I'm not saying that your statements don't have SOME truth to them. We should all be respectful of one another. Talking down to you for the time your on probation is to get your attention and to see if you can handle it. And take my word for it, if you don't get your mind right you'll be talked to long after you get off probation the same way. Believe me when I say that you're not running the show. Your excuse that my talking to you man to man will make you a better firefighter. Don't worry. There are going to be many that talk to you like a man if you keep the attitude you have. You being concerned with what the other probies are doing isn't necessary. That's the job of the station officer. Relax a little and take the chip off your shoulder. No one wants to work with you or anyone else that can't be part of the crew. And challenging the process on a daily basis will only bring the wrong kind of attention to you. I'm sure you're not the only one who has this problem in different degrees. Try something else for a change. Give a little extra instead of whining about the required amount. Look for things to that are positive that will draw attention to you. There are those of you, and I don't want to label all, who think that your opinion is the only opinion, right or wrong. You'll find that having NO opinion at this point is the fastest way to being one of the team. Now get along and write a snappy rebuttal to my post just to show the guys and girls that you don't take no shit and I don't know what the f**k I'm talking about.

Received via Email 10-05-07 Well, I guess I'm like some of you. I also had to clean the pool. It sucked because when no one was looking the gardener and the maide use to get it on, in the shallow end. That sucked. Well, not so much with cleaning the pool, but because I wanted to tap that action, too. What really sucked is the fact that dear old dad wouldn't give me access to the third garage. He said I'd have to waid till I was 21 before he'd give me the keys to what lay there. Shit... when I turned 21 he gave me the keys, alright. I opened the door to the third garage and all I found was a safe. The keys were to the friggin' safe. There was no Porche', no Lambourghini. It was just a safe filled with stocks and bonds.
You guys keep talking about working for this asshole of a mayor. You should have cleaned the pool under my dad. Well, not "under" my dad.... you know what I mean.
