I believe that at 10 years, Brother Mott is has held office longer than anyone else to date in the history of this local. Lets make this even easier, in the past 12 months how many Monthly Union Meetings has Kantaskas been to? I am sure he will be at this next one just so people can see who he is. Some of you might have noticed that the spring came and went. I asked "What's going on?" I was told that because L747 President Michael Blank was fighting the good fight with the city to bring back the "contract of a lifetime," that he'd pushed MDA collections back. Fast forward to the June union meeting and we were informed by El Presidente that we should prepare ourselves for an August collections blitz at our local Publix markets. As I write this it is now August 15. I have since been told that our dear union president got off the dime a little too late to secure ample collections dates at our local Publix markets before the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon takes place over the Labor Day weekend. But wait... the story gets better. I've also been told that we're still going to attend the Telethon as usual but we're actually going to be handing over a dummy check in a measure to save face! In my soon to be twenty-nine years in this union I can't recall when we've ever had to stoop to such measures. I can't recall when we've ever missed an entire year of collections. The IAFF's been MDA's largest donor for more than 50 years and this is where Local 747 now resides?
I really like the following quote from the movie Sucker Punch - "If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything." Think for a minute about how it applies to all of us right about now. Now try this one on for size: "I'm standing in the middle of the street because crippled kids can't stand at all." I especially like that quote because I authored it. Many Departments have many different lines of Leadership. In SPFR for example there are Lieutenants, Captains, District Chiefs, Division Chief, Assistant Chief and then Chief. Just so you know PERC was willing to allow the 3 Divisions Rescue, Prevention, and Training into the Supervisory Unit when they were petitioned. Lieutenants in SPFR were considered too far down on the list to make it. You just dont need 4 levels of Supervision for 1 level of workers. Oh by the way, did you ask Mark Sweet where he gets his information? Yeah we all know that he calls the IAFF frequently but ask him if he gets called back.

I don't know who you are but if anyone on the job has every hit all the bases at one time and got every one of them right . . . it's you. I cannot understand why, if so many are unhappy and concerned over the shenanigans being done by a pseudo-president, that he's still in office. Anyone who doesn't know or understand the situation merely needs to read the post authored by the person dated 9.2.12 #3. It doesn't get any clearer than that.
In fact, and I don't know this is true, it could be that the president is taking his tactics from ex-union president[s] who hold a grudge or have some petty axe to grind with the members. It just doesn't add up sometimes when the president goes off on another dumb ass tangent that quite obviously he doesn't have the mental capacity to think up for himself. Sometimes it's easy to blame the obvious targets since they are the easiest to find but even the chief and the mayor, as adled as they are, are scratching their heads asking WTF.
A thourough cleansing of all the possibilities is needed here. Jimmy isn't going to jeapordize his money pit by getting his hands dirty and possibly be caught with one of them in the cookie jar. The mayor is merely a vindictive crybaby who can't get over the fact that the firefighters don't adore him. He's not going to waste his time trying to think up things to covertly undermine the union. First of all he's not that smart and second of all he doesn't need to be covert.
So who is pulling the strings on this out of control Pinochio? Why not begin a process to eliminate one at a time those on or off the job who have enough knowledge to point this puppet in the wrong direction every time? Who would gain from a Local in shambles and relish the opportunity to charge in and operate the Local from a retiree postition? Who in their right mind would try to get another totally unqualified person or persons get elected to an office about which they know nothing. (Sound familiar) We've already made the most grieveous error possible electing a bufoon for a president. Do we want to remove the only people left who can even begin to run the Local? We threw Winnie to the curb and now the dissidents that accomplished that are working to get the rest and do the same to them.
I don't personally know them any more than I know the Prince of Failure but from what I've seen from just one it's only going to get worse with several. Look for the puppeteer. He's there. You just can't see him yet. Who would jump at the chance to be the head of the Local? And someone please get to work on the by-laws to prevent this scenario from ever happening again.

Yes, I am an informed Union member that has obviously attended more meetings than you and all of your lovers combined. This issue was discussed in detail a few years ago when PERC was reviewing the issue. Rick Pauley has sucessfully fought off many write ups and to have a person running that has made the statement that he would leave his duty of representing a member in trouble to the Blank one is astonishing. Then in order to smear the sewer mans sludge even further the B shift is behind Sweet to show the Chief that they are 100% behind his craziness. God I hope my adventure was only a fluke and not the overall failed thinking of the B shift. Are you guys really still upset over the Chiefs Promise to give you a shift rotation 6 years ago? I guess some folks just cant admit a verdit reached by a neutral third party arbitrator was based on right overcoming wrong. On the 23rd the local goes into an arbitration over the 7 year drop extension for us. On the 29th the local again steps before another arbitrator for the drop in the supervisor unit. On Nov 6th the members of this local will be fighting for their livelihoods on election day, Nov 9th the Local will be benefitting by the generosity of Mark Ferguson and his Golf tournament players. Dec 14th the Local will go before another arbitrator to argue the discipline for Mike Weaver. In case your wondering where I am going with this, it is this important FACT. Rick Pauley has handled ALL grievences for the past 4 years. He has all of the knowledge and history on each case. Rick Pauley has made sure that there are sufficient players on the field to play in the MDA boot drives, Golf tournaments, and many other times of need. God help us now. If you were counting on things going your way before, give it up now. We have lost before we even show up. All 4 tires are flat and no one has an air pump. Now for the 114 members that have absolutly no excuse for not even returing a friggin ballot, I dont even want to hear the lame ass excuses. You did as much to sink the ship as the 179 that voted for the 2 Tea Baggers. Someow we now have 2 fire Lts. that have an extreme desire to fracture the Rank and File further by removing themselves from our unit and making the jump into the Supervisory group so they can also enjoy the reduced work schedule. There is no need to bargain for something when you can sell out your members so much easier. On a good note, the yard at the office will never need to be weeded again. As for what Sweet is going to bring to the table, your guess is as good as mine. Oh yeah, the beer supply will rotate out much quicker now. Some of that stuff in the refer lately has been 6 or 8 months old.

The St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters is comprised of roughly 99% of those that work for SPFR and they pay their dues dollars and set aside dollars in the annual operating budget for certain events. On top of that there is a very small hand full of members that bust their asses to ensure things happen to bring in a few more extra dollars to help others when we can through a benevolence Fund. Most recently there has been the addition of the St. Petersburg Firefighters Charity Fund which is a recognized 501c3 charity. I find it odd that you go out of your way NOT to give any credit or even a thank you for what the membership of Local 747 has provided to help in many ways.
Let's see, the annual SPFR block party, if what I am hearing is correct something like 2000 hot dogs were provided, cooked, and served along with chips by Local 747. In your most recent current events report You seemed to forget about that.
Let's see, the halloween Haunted house, again over 500 hot dogs and chips were provided by local 747 to the SPFR Fire Explorer post for their fund raiser during this event, again you forgot to give any kudos.
Let's see, the first ever SPFR awards banquet, hmm Local 747 sponsored a table and with the use of the Firefighters Charity, Corporate sponsorships were made possible.
And finally let's see, the annual retirees picnic somehow an event that started as a bring your own covered dish has blossomed into the necessity of local 747 again providing 200 Hamburgers, hot dogs and giveaways to help with this event.
All this and all we hear is how the Union won't play ball and because of that we don't have a contract, don't have overtime money, and we see units out of service because of pitiful staffing levels, money wasted on write ups and promotions held for over a year. All this leads to distrust, a further loss of morale, and no pride to Claim SPFR as a place to work. So Jimmy, I ask this simple question of you. What is wrong with YOU?

So are these going to become secret meetings, too? I notice that Blank wasn't in too much of a hurry to talk about union business at the end of the meeting while the video was on. He should be more worried about what he ways in front of Guellas than what he says in front of us.

This survey is flawed. Captains and DC's who work a 48 hour week should be ranked at 91% just below singers. To: My Fire Fighter Family
Monday December 10th, 2012, all I can say is that it was the end of a very important time in my life. My career as a Firefighter with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is over.
When I first stepped through the doorway of Fire Headquarters back in January 1990, I realized that I was on my way to becoming a part of something uniquely special. Each of my past career paths had taught me things that I knew were now going to help me tremendously.
I wish to let everyone know that this career choice is by far the best choice anyone can make. While the pay might be better doing something else, it is only a temporary thing. I would have never seen, heard, learned, or experienced what I have if I had not been proudly wearing this uniform.
Knowing that as a part of this Team, many people’s lives have been changed. While I like to remember the best of these I realize that there has been much sadness too.
Having personally experienced joyous family gatherings and tragedies as well, and it is with the constant support of this family that has made the difference. A firefighter is never alone, and never has to feel that he or she must face a difficult time by themselves.
While my time as a Firefighter has ended much sooner than I would have liked, I will continue to support this profession and fight to keep the benefits that we have Fought for, Bargained in Good Faith for, and EARNED.
It has truly been my pleasure to serve mankind and my sisters and brothers; there is no higher calling. I'm overwhelmed that you would call me friend.

Truth be told, he never stopped working for us and is still working for us, today. That's the way he's wired. Like many of you, I was in the audience on the day that Winnie spoke before Council and the Mayor during our most recent impasse hearing. He had lots to say about the good in our membership - so much so that his admiration for us brought him to tears. He turned around and looked at all of us and told Council and the Mayor that he loved us. It was only a day earlier that we had counted the ballots, throwing one of the most effective and influential Local union leaders out on his ear.
How many of you profess to understand the level of devotion that one must poses or the personal sacrifice that one must endure to take crap from all sides on a daily basis, while most rest easy knowing that somone else is always standing guard on the wall? Winne does and that's the big difference in being a winner and being first loser.

It's easy, in the sometimes intense flurry of things related to this Local, to get overly emotional and not realize that it seemed ok in your mind but when it got in print it was not what you intended. Or, maybe you did. But one thing we all have to remember is that this is a PUBLIC website and even though the webmaster vigorously enforces your first amendment rights doesn't mean that someone, either in the Local or not, won't take umbrage at your opinion. After all, it's just your opinion until you offer some sort of proof of what you say.
There are those who could see your statement as an accusation in which it now becomes slander or defamation of character in the least. This is where it gets dicey. When you make a statement like "THEY ARE STEALING FROM US AND NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT", it implies that you know something as fact. And if you do you could be asked to produce proof of it. If not, you COULD potentially be in hot water. Accusations, in this case, of stupid, uneducated, moronic, clueless failures, dumbasses, and such are examples of proveable adjectives when it comes to the leadership. Stealing is a toatlly different situation.
We all enjoy the free and open forum provided for us by the webmaster who seldom removes anything that is sent to him to be posted. If he does occassionally see the unmitigated harmful post, he declines posting it and explains why he did so. This is not censoring but instead the normal actions of someone who is attempting to save us from ourselves. This forum has been available for many years now and truth be told it's read by many who outwardly profess to be non-readers. And being largely a venue for venting to the membership it must be remembered that the public also has access to it. (mayor, if you're reading this, bite me) Bottom line is that we have to be careful about posting accusations (or statements that can be construed to be accusations). If when you read it back before posting there is any doubt in your mind as to your intent then you may need to take another couple seconds and think about it.
This website, and the hard work of the webmaster to make it happen, have been around for a long time now and it's not something we want to lose. And we damn sure don't want to lose it over something that unwittingly became the cause of it's demise. Say what you mean but think before you send. Received via Email: 02-01-13 First off, we all know that a small number of members, which on any given day can make up a majority in our elections, convinced each other that for whatever reason it was time to toss out the incumbent President and install "anybody but Winnie".
In Winnie's defense I would remind you that Winnie, in and of himself, was the longest active President this Local has ever had. In addition to that he is a District Vice President for the Florida Professional Fire Fighters and the most educated and informed President in our history. His skills were of the highest and his eduacational accomplishments were without peer. At the present time he works and teaches for the I.A.F.F. and in addition to being an active dues paying member in this Local, he is the bargaining agent for several other Local's throught Pinellas and Pasco. But we all know these things. And the members who were so anxious to get rid of him, like most people who have made grave mistakes in judgement, are now being very silent about their actions and would rather not talk about it.
In finding success in the removal of Winnie from office, the majority find themselves also in a quandry and must sell their new champion to the rest of the membership. The problem lies in that in their zeal and anticipation to throw away all that has gone before they have replaced Winnie with the least capable, on all levels, member possible. Now this wouldn't be so downright moronic if it wasn't for the fact that the same bunch got rid of one of only two left with the knowlege and negotiating skills left on the bargaining team. In their re-found ability to determine the best future for the Local the majority tossed the only person left, other than Billy, to the wolves. This was their answer to the claims that the election of the NEW president was the wrong thing to do. That being to add even more stupidity to the bargaining team and the leadership of the Local.
Now we have a contract offer, that was supposedly the very best we could hope for, shoved in our faces and told to sign and agree to. We all know the failings of this proposal and the pitfalls that it covertly contains. It's trash and the team knows it, the city knows it, and it's sure as hell a fact that WE all know it. So since we're all in the same boat isn't it time we took a hard look at where it is we're going? Isn't it time to tell everyone from the mayor and his council down to kiss our ass? (Yeah, I know, we have to hold our breath and wait for the council to come to our rescue. Horse shit !! They're not coming and never intended to) Haven't we had enough of this bullshit not only from the city but from our own negotiating team? Do we REALLY want another three freakin' years of this lame ass representation on Blank and Hay's part and laughable, toungue in cheek, offers on the part of the city? The city knows weakness when they see it. Are any of you so damn ignorant that you can't see that they're just messing with us? They don't give a shit if we NEVER agree on anything again. They will get a pay raise even though you won't. Every unionized group from the I.B.F.O. to the cops and the other Firefighter Locals all over the state are laughing at us and wondering what the hell we're all about. I know most of you are just happy to have a job but it's only a matter of time until the city sees the total weakness and really starts leaning. It will happen.
I've been reading the posts on this site for quite some time now and have come to what is going to be an unpopular conclusion. That conclusion is that instead of banging away at brother Blank and brother Hay, we should all be doing more to try to understand what kind of pressure they are both under. These two brothers, but no members of the majority elite, have offered themselves up as willing to lead this Local to a new day. A day with untold benefits and never before seen leniency in rules and regulations. No Physicals. No Pool time. No Vacation time. No Holiday time. No Driver pay. No Paramedic pay. Everybody will be the same. Equal on all levels. However, these two bastions of protection from harm, in any form, can't do it alone. Those of you who continually bash and bad mouth these two members need to see the big picture. You need to stop looking for things to find that you don't like about the president and the EVP and look for ways to educate and assist them in their day to day meetings with Chief Jimmy and the mayor. You should have some compasion for the fact that they both attack our problems and futures with so much concern. They work tirelessly to beat back the desires of the city and the overlord mayor who would be king. It's quite disgraceful the way they're talked about and made to look bad just on this site. It's a shame, I tell you.
So here's what I'm proposing we do. We help these poor mooks by being there at every turn. We attend the meetings. We show up at headquarters when we know they're there. We stop and go in the union office any time we see a car parked there. We question everyhing they do. We go to negotiating sessions. In fact we could even make comments if we think they're not doing it right. It's time we took some interest in what they're doing and try to assist in any way we can. Now I know you have second jobs on your days off but if you're the upstanding, first class employee to your off-duty boss as you are to the Chief then I doubt if you'll have much trouble getting him to give you a couple hours off each day to protect your job as a firefighter. You DO want to keep your job as a firefighter, right?
I know you want to be part of this brave new world that Blank and Hay are trying SO hard to provide for each of us. And it's a monumental task that they can't do alone. They need your help. Oh, I almost forgot. Since no one has had a pay raise in three years and it looks like no one is going to get one for the next three years we should be trying every means possible to maintain a fluid and stable bank account for the Local. I think it's time to make the paychecks leaving the union office commensurate with the job the paid office holder is doing. In other words all paid office holders no longer get the healthy paychecks from the Local that they have been accustomed to and will be paid each month on the basis of what positive things they accomplished for the last 30 days. At the monthly meeting the members who are paid by the Local to work for the Local can meet with the Executive Board one hour before the meeting starts. Each paid member can show what they have accomplished in the alloted time period. The members of the Executive Board (or an elected committee of members) will vote on how much the paid member's actions have benefited the Local membership. More benefit, more money. Top dollar would be what they are currently receiving. Bottom dollar would be zero. Simple. Someone needs to compose an amendment to the by-laws that would reflect this new pay process. I think it's time the members start getting what they're paying for. And look at it this way. If you think you're getting the same bang for your buck with Blank that you got from Winnie then vote AGAINST it. If you think Blank can't stop stepping on his dick on a daily basis, then vote FOR it. All you have to do is follow the money. When it goes away so will Blank and whoever else can't produce. I like it. You should too.

In fact I wish this to all of you who will be the last members of Local 747 to accomplish as much. Within a very short time all potential employees who seek a job with this department will not be so fortunate. You are a dying breed. What you, who are currently employed, will find at the end of your, um, well, I can't call it a career since to you it's merely a job, so we'll just settle on job or maybe "rainbow". One of the sad and very distasteful facts of said job is thatso far, for three and probably six of your twenty years, you recieved NO increase in pay. That's almost one third of your time spent working for a pension from this department. And you sucked down every minute of it and asked for more.
Oh sure, you'll garner a big ol' wad of cash when you retire but how many will use that wisely? It'll go, and it'll go fast. Ask many of those who've gone before you. And then what? But who cares. That's far down the line for most if not many of you. Have you ever stopped long enough to think about what things could be like ten or twelve years from now when the drop comes around? Will there even BE a drop?
It's well known that the funding for member retirement for this department is in the bag. It's also in the bag that shortly the city will no longer provide or offer a retirement system known as a pension. The new boys and girls will have a 401K-like system to invest in over their time here. Not that you'd need give a shit. If it doesn't affect you, who cares? Right? If you think about it, so far the city is in the best possible position. You, as a group, have been funded and are out of the way. Any new hires are funded by their own means and yes, they too, are out of the way. The only thing standing in the way of a gigantic party at city hall is the demise of any future pay raises for those currently employed. And with the two fools at the helm of the only means of resistance to that condition it's not too far off to completion.

Here at Us vs. Them we're dumbfounded when we hear members talk about the City of St. Petersburg as if it were some kind of benevolent father who is always ready, willing and able to reach out; to go above and beyond to help make it right by its Fire Fighters, especially when any one of them is injured in the line of duty. Brad Westphal is one of those Fire Fighters who knows all too well that behind the benevolent father's velvet glove lies an iron fist.
For months the City paid a private investigator to follow and take video and still pictures of Brad in settings as private as his backyard to trips to his Doctor or simply going to the store. This was all in an attempt to keep from paying Brad what was owed to him as a Fire Fighter injured in the line of duty.
Brad and his attorneys have been to court on several occasions fighting for benefits owed him. This past month Brad found himself back in court one more time to recover a year's worth of lost wages that the city refused to pay him. Take a look at the video from the Florida 1st District Court of Appeals and you'll get a sense of just how far the City of St. Petersburg will go to keep one permanently injured Fire Fighter from a year's salary. See if you get a sense of what the judges think about the City's treatment of a "catastrophically" injured Fire Fighter.
