Go have a look at the larger departments with 1500 people on board and ask them if they need 24 fire chiefs to hold down the fort.

If you can't fathom having only one FD in this county, break it down to two or three... but why does every little one house FD in this county need their own chief, their own DC's, training personnel... etc etc etc? The savings could be enormous and the number of jobs for blue shirts to put out the fires would remain virtually the same. The county is wasting their time going to the chiefs for advice, they should be talking to junior and senior blue shirts, and union representatives. The chiefs are not in a position to give unbiased opinions. I am sympathetic to that, but I pay taxes too.
If we get out in front of this and support it, the tax payers will love us. Fight against it, and we will look like a bunch of tax dollar grabbing lazy bastards. Lets get the word out to him that we appreciate his generous offer and respect his thoughtfulness of us. However, would he please consider donating this food to a local food bank. I know none of us are without and some of the stations dont eat together anyway. IF that is not favorable what if each station took the money they would have spent for that day and donate that amount to a charity of their choice. Just a thought.

Yesterday the County Fire and EMS staff proposed their sweeping changes, some of us in the proposal are directly taking a hit while other will have indirect issues from the proposal.
The meat of the proposal is the reduction of funding paramedic positions, to the tune of 6 million dollars + other cuts the best I can determine. Each of us understand very well the that Funding Cuts = Firefighter Jobs. I will spend some time going through the proposal again.
The one thing that sticks out right now is the strategy to separate Fire and EMS to the commission when we are so integrated in our responses and staffing. The other is the data that Hare used to comfort the response time issue.
listed below are the proposed cuts (they say changes and fine tuning) if your not listed they did not propose any immediate changes, but the ancillary cuts will come I am sure.
East Lake- Cut 1 ALS Engine
Palm Harbor- Cut 1 ALS Engine
Clearwater- Cut 2 rescues and make them ALS Engines
Largo - Cut 1 ALS Engine
Pinellas Suncoast- Cut 1 Rescue and 1 ALS Engine
Pinellas Park- Cut 1 Rescue make it an ALS Engine
St Petersburg- Cut 4 Rescues and make them ALS Engines
St Pete Bch- Cut 2 Rescues and make them ALS Engines
This would eliminate 10 rescues, and 4 ALS Engines and the County says it will only impact response times by seconds.

You guessed it, if you thought that E3 was the busiest fire engine in the county before, then get ready to hold on to you asses. E3 will now be covering the holes by E1, 8 and 11. But thats ok Gulfport will still run our calls for us, like they have already been doing back when we still had those rescue units, but only now T 11 will be the first responder unit instead of E11. On the west end we can rely on South Pasadena and Lealman to handle the calls with T9 running first response and on the north end I guess E4, 6, 7 will get to cover when ALS10 goes out. Hmm does anyone remember back when Rengine 10 was first tried? How did we get back here? Whats next the old 10 codes? How could Tish do this to us?

Like most of us with Local 747, we have had issues and have been bullied by our brothers. Poor decisions like buying the property next to the union office and don't forget the purchase of the sign shop, have left us disapointed with our own Union.
We would like nothing more than be more involved and actually come to the meetings. For such a large membership we do far less than other smaller IAFF Unions locally. We give our monthly dues because that's the only way we feel comfortable supporting our union. When the atmosphere changes on 1st Ave N, you will have alot more assistance and it will be standing room only at the meetings. I am looking forward to being part of the IAFF WHEN I RETIRE but I'm afraid I will have to join another Local to do so. When I spoke to the IAFF they assured me there would be no problem with joining another Local. The yearly dues are a fraction of ours (WE KNOW WHY). Call other Locals and you will be amazed how different and professional they are compared to ours. Bigger isn't always better - though I wish we were.
Editor: While I wouldn't for a single minute offer rebuke for you having an opinion, I will say this: It is your opinion. Not everyone traveling the path together is going to realize the same experiences. As to your assertion that we made "poor decisions like buying the property next to the union office and don't forget the purchase of the sign shop, have left us disappointed with our own Union" while I would like to think that everyone will agree with me that those two purchases were good ones, not everyone is going to.
The purchase of the sign shop was merely mimicking what other leading Locals around the state had already done. Rick Feinberg was the president of the Local at the time and to say that we were spending a fair amount of time at other peoples sign shops before purchasing our own building, would be an understatement. Just ask him. When a politician comes to you with a thousand dollars and says, "I'm leaving the sign making up to you" you have a golden opportunity to deliver a product for your politician that cannot and will not be duplicated anywhere else at the same price. We control costs by buying screens, chemicals, ink, stakes/wire and chloroplast blanks at wholesale as well as providing the free labor. If you want to see an example of what a sign could cost the opposition if they had to go out (and they frequently do) and buy from a retailer, take a look at the first example that I ran across: http://home.earthlink.net/~nponewash/id6.html. Union labor can print more than twice as many signs (for the same money) as the opposition, allowing the politician that you support to realize a value added extra. When you own your own enterprise, you are beholding to your membership only!
Was the building that we bought the right building for our long term goals? Probably not. But we got good use out of it for the time that we had it and sold it for what we had in it.
As to the purchase of our current property next door to our union hall, I campaigned hard for that through this site. You can call me a bully if you wish but the web page that I used as a springboard for the purchase still exists. Take a look and tell me if you think that you were being bullied by my words on this website. Additionally, by everyone's reading the explanation of how the proposed purchase was to be paid for, you'll also have in your hands the answer to the assertions that you make that members of other Locals "...yearly dues are a fraction of ours." They are what they are. There's no free lunch.
Both were purchased using the democratic process. The vote doesn't always go the way you like it but you have ample opportunity to sway (not bully) other peoples opinion on any given subject.
Recently, many of us sat in on an informative couple of hours chat with Brother Jim Brantly of Fort Myers Beach FD. Jim's now retired and is working towards becoming a lawyer. The topic of discussion: "The pros and cons of consolidating Locals." You speak of how "professional" some of the other Local's are. You go on to say that "Bigger isn't always better..." That's true but you need to have a clear understanding of why bigger should be better and Jim laid it out. I was somewhat taken aback to hear some of the comments being made by the union presidents of some of our surrounding Locals when Jim was running through a laundry list of what a Local should have in place to be both successful in its own right and before ever thinking about consolidating into one big Local. Outside of Clearwater and St. Pete, there's hardly a fax machine or a business phone number available to reach a single one of your self described professional Locals, let alone a piece of real property. The St. Petersburg Association of Fire Fighters is in good financial shape due in part to the understanding nature of it's members and the good stewardship of her leadership. We're in the best political shape we've been in in years because a large population of our members got off of their ass' and worked for some respect. Do we have a full slate of friends in St. Petersburg City Council? No. But with upcoming elections I trust we'll all work twice as hard to build on our past successes. I don't know if you took part in the last election cycle but you're kidding yourself if you think that we're doing less than the other Locals. Your personal involvement (or lack thereof [I don't know]) shapes your perspective on how Local 747 compares to her peers.
As to your comments about the atmosphere on 1st. Ave. No., everyone has a unique relationship with the folks that work there and if we were giving away steak dinners on meeting night, you'd still only see the same core-constituency appear in the doorway. For the period of time that covers the past several union presidents, the numbers attending union meetings have changed little.
If it's true that you can join another Local when you retire, I would ask, why? What is it that you'd be willing to do in retirement for a group of individuals that you don't even know, that you wouldn't do in your previous twenty-five or thirty years for the ones who brought you to the dance?

I am not the only one who thinks Administration and those who run the union have the same agenda. We feel they don't really care about us individually. The Union has run many of us off who wanted to be a part just as our administration has killed our spirit. We go to work and just put in our time. I remember (a long time ago now) when we loved to go to work and administration and the Union worked together. Many of us would have moved up more in the department if our hearts were still in it- and the department has paid a high price because of it. Look at some of their choices. Some can't even hardly read or write a sentence. We cover for those officers and they bring down the deparment and the good officers and the rest of us too. It's a little like our economy, we are in a spiral. We don't know how to stop it or help. We have pretty much given up and just pay our dues. Our union has sucessfully fought a hard battle against the City for a member that is not only in the DROP, but is real close to being out of here. Our Union played a vital role in helping our Brothers in Bellair defeat someone that wanted to decimate their fire service as a new Mayor. Our union was recently instramental in getting our City Council to hold a workshop to discuss the proposed changes to the EMS funding for our city, this is a direct threat to at least 12-17 people losing their jobs. This would also require the City to come up with additional $1.5 million in funds to make up for the things the county doesn't want to pay for anymore. Anyway you look at it, if your a new employee or one that is ready to walk out the door, YOUR UNION IS and ALWAYS will be there to Fight the Fight for what is Right.

You're right on all counts and in a more recent example, we dare say that the St. Petersburg City Council might well have been left totally in the dark had Local 747's Union President not intervened. Pinellas County officials were working the city manager circuit (vice mayor in St. Pete) - purposely circumventing the fire chiefs. Hearing this, President Newton made appointment's to talk to each of our councilmembers. Sensing that we were about to be placed in a position to lose people and to compromise our rescue division, Council swung into action and called for the dept. to give their opinion of how we'd be impacted by the County's ditching four of our rescue trucks.
Jimmy Large, Bill Ward and Steve Knight were in attendance on behalf of the dept. For the city; Mayor Baker, Tish Elston and the entire Council were in attendance. Local 747's President, Executive VP and Secretary/Treasurer were there as well as Presidents and members from an additional eight member Locals. The numbers of Union members from Pinellas County wasn't lost on Herb Polson who asked each of the Presidents in attendance to stand and announce where they were from. He noted that this must be a pretty important issue for all involved if all these Locals showed up for a St. Petersburg EMS issue. Your Union made that happen!
When it was all said and done our councilmembers got a clear understanding of what was at stake and this was due in no small part to the work done by Steve Knight. He'd stayed up at HQ till 3 am working on gathering facts and figures and compiling them into a PowerPoint presentation that was spot-on. With the County pulling funding for our current system that works, the City of St. Petersburg would have to suddenly come up with 1.5 million dollars a year as a reward for getting 'less' from the County! We'd lose people, monies and we'd be running engines into the ground every five years instead of every ten to thirteen, not to mention the delays in service to our citizenry. After seeing Steve's rendition of where we are and where the County was taking us, our Council unanimously agreed to send a strong message to the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners.
None of this would have taken place without Union intervention.

That's 8 x 3 24 positions if my math is correct. . Effective April 1, 2009 at 0800 hours and until further notice, the minimum shift staffing level for Operations and Rescue Division units has been reduced to 72 personnel to include a minimum of 15 Stand-Alone Firefighter/Paramedics. As personnel are available, units shall be staffed above the minimum staffing level in the following order: ALS Engines, Truck/Aerial Companies, then Engine Companies. Two women are dead and their husbands remained missing Sunday after a boat sank Saturday afternoon during a heavy Lake Powell windstorm.
One couple, however, made their way about 1,500 feet to shore after the boat took on water during a windstorm, said Kane County sheriff's spokesman Tracy Glover.
"They were just lucky," he said of James and Heather Brady. "They stuck together and held onto whatever they could."
After reports that the boating party was overdue, park rangers began searching by plane and helicopter; they found the Bradys, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., Saturday afternoon on the shore near Padre Butte, Glover said. They were treated for hypothermia. Rangers also found the body of Katherine Prescott, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
The body of Mary Anne Taranto, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., was found Sunday morning, Glover said.
Robert Prescott and Terry Michael Taranto remain missing, Glover said. Crews will resume their search this morning.
Authorities said the couples were in their late 50s and early 60s.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
