Can any of you tell me your OK with this staffing policy? I know you "get the job done", we all do, (its what we're trained to do)but at what cost and what risk? This is no way is a jab at any member of SPFR.
The morale issues your dept.has are blatantly obvious by the distain for most of your leaders since you air them here for the world to see. I DID criticize for that, I will admit that. I hate seeing a fine dept. with a 100 plus year history be viewed in that manner by what is very apparent that only a small minority of the members of SPFR are publishing here. We've stuffed loads of literature bags at Kathleen Ford's HQ and then delivered much of what we produced. We've built large signs. We stood in the rain with Ford signs during the debates at the Palladium and also got a bit wet for a time at the Devil Rays game while working with Angela Rouson, tonight. We stood with Kathleen in northeast part of town and again today at Tyrone and 66 Street. The lonely Bill Foster poser that we encountered couldn't stand the heat, so he got out of the kitchen. We blanketed the area with gold and black and it didn't go unnoticed by some of Kathleen's organizers. They said that it wasn't difficult to find the firefighters in those gold shirts! When the day was done we all enjoyed good food and friends and the Devil Rays game at the northeast WingHouse. Call 323-1786 or stop by the union hall to help. While it is true that he is running under an alias of Mike Wimmers (MW) and he has promised who knows what to Ray Landes (RL) to be his campaign manager and to make the calls and send the text messages, make no mistake Chief Large and the City Administration is the driving force in this fiasco.
What surprises me the most is the faith that Chief Large has placed in such an old timer as MW. Since Jimbo has shown no interest in experience during his past promotions I find it odd that he would turn to someone in the DROP with old and outdated experience for this push. Maybe if this fails Ted Gardener will be the next one to be nominated?
While MW did in fact once serve as the secretary and as president, it must be pointed out that this was over 20+ years ago (1987 to be exact.) Now we are to believe that his flame has been relit and he is once again ready to be the leader of the local, and now wants to have everyone believe that during his last few years he is once again ready to take the reins and then leave the local in the old ways that he remembers. Oh boy, volleyball and bed races will be on the agendas again. At least the negotiations sessions will be eventful again, while I personally have enjoyed watching the cities teams squirm and choke on their words from time to time under the current team, the hands slamming on the table and walking out on the Cities negotiators will be a joy to see again. Besides the embarrassment we suffered how far did that get us in the past? Please someone remind me. Lets not forget the beer parties that will be necessary to bring the ole gang together again. I guess it's a secret but the old gangs are not here anymore.
I have heard that some of our youngsters at MW's very own station have been overheard as saying they don't know of anything that the union has accomplished during the terms of the current union leaders. I guess MW forgets about the changes that have been accomplished even in the short 3 years he has been back on the department. How hard can it be to remember that his pension has more than doubled since he came back to work. Or the implementation of the COLA. This is really a tickler since WM and one of the Pension Board trustees Ray Landes are both in this same station.
In other happenings it is apparent that while MW the fire fighter, may remember the many times the union has taken the city to task for contractual violations, it is very likely that MW the fire chiefs crony, remembers these embarrassments only too well.
If Mike Wimmers is indeed ready to turn his "I care about the union" switch back on, then I welcome his desire. Unfortunately it will take a whole lot of convincing that this is nothing more than another administrative attempt to wrestle the reins away from the UNION Leadership and to remove the Political might it has regained and is in a great position of strengthening in the next few weeks.
A vote for MW is unfortunately a vote for City Administration and that is not were we need to revisit now or ever.

After the union was force fed the supplemental pension plan in 1971, nobody was able to budge things our way an inch until Wimmers became president and lowered the minimum retirement age from 55 to 50. It was a big deal at the time because the city threatened to never give up anything regarding pension improvements. Mike did a lot more than that that during his tenure, but it was his reduction in the retirement age that paved the way for every other improvement we have enjoyed since.

I have a shitpot full of money in the bank and it matter little to me that my union president is fully prepared to bring the full force of the law to bear to protect me so long as I pay for it.
Received via Email 08.30.09 I was one of many in and out of the union hall, all day, today and I can tell you that I've never seen a bigger army of men and women working for the betterment of our Local. While the B shift was on duty the A and C shifts were preparing for what election day would bring. Last minute phone calls were being made to A & B shifters (C shift's on duty for the elections), firming up their commitment to represent L747 at the polls. A & C shifters were manning three different intersections with signs while Kathleen Ford's HQ staff made several stops by our office to resupply us with literature and sign materials. All the while we had stacks of varying sizes of union tee-shirts being readied to be delivered along with their respective cache' of yard signs and palm cards. We had a regular production line going. I wish all of you could have seen it. You would have been proud.
On a sad note, we had many of the youngsters in the office, today, who will no doubt end up being laid-off at the end of September unless the Union can intervene on their behalf later in the week at the City Council meeting. As much as Chief Large has tried to work deals to keep them on past the first of the new year, the Mayor couldn't be budged. The whole group of them were out performing literature drops while other work was being completed at the union hall. Winnie surprised them by calling them up and inviting them all to lunch at YaYa's with us. After a great lunch, we went in two directions. Those of us working at the union hall went back to what we were doing and the youngsters went back to completing their assigned tasks. These guys understand the meaning of "never say die." Truly, a greater bunch I've never seen.
On a brighter note, Pete Hill stopped by the hall to pick up his polling place gear and made mention of the fact that he and his partner had a rescue call near Bill Foster's office. He went on to say that they saw Bill and for some reason, he appeared to be in a bit of a huff. With the rescue call winding down, our rescue crew made their back to the near vicinity of their rescue truck when Foster approached. He said something to the effect of, "You guys are killing me. Everywhere I look I see those damned yellow shirts on the street corners."

Received via Email 09.01.09 Well today's the day and I couldn't be more proud of the job that has been done so far in the political arena by Local 747. At last the word has begun to show fruition. For many years I firmly believed that political activities would never be a means by which to further our needs as firefighters. But I have to admit that in the past year or two I've had to change my mind. And it has to be because of the hard work and dedication of the members of Local 747 getting off their asses and getting the job done. Apparently political action works when it's done right. And I take my hat off to all of you who are doing a great job making it abundantly clear that when it's done right it works. The leadership has performed a task which eluded the vast majority of the past presidents and that was getting the membership involved in a very big way. I'm very proud of the work and dedication of each and every member of the Local. And let me take this opportunity to say congratulations to Kathleen Ford on her win in the upcoming runoff. This is a big one for the members of Local 747 and they can be very, very proud of the job they did in affecting the outcome of this election.

We had over 100 members on the street on Tuesday and it wasn't because everyone just showed up. It was because of good leadership. Did you notice what the cops had on their backs and what they had in their hands? Imitation being the best form of flattery we must be doing something right. We were three for three in the primaries again.
The SS offset wasn't removed without good leadership. The COLA wasn't obtained without good leadership. The bullshit physicals with the chief's secretary making copies to CD of your most personal information is now mostly gone because of good leadership and because a 34 year veteran with the courage of his convictions chose to stand up to this fire department's horribly corrupt and morally bankrupt front office. The way I see it, I have a choice to side with a few people who by their own admission are outside of the inner circle or I can stay with what works. They feel like they're on the outside because they'd rather run the union their own way rather than run 'with' it even when we're experiencing the most successful run in our history.
I'm not saying that Mike wouldn't be a good leader, just that we've got one now and I remain unconvinced when one of Mike's supporters keeps repeating that we need Mike in office simply because it's time for a change. How moronic.

Have any of you complainers ever experianced that the office is open at the station until past 2am? Do any of these complainers realize that the president's day begins each morning when the off going shifts have tossed and turned all night mulling over a problem and they just have to get it off their chest before they go home? And dont think the oncoming shifts and the Administration wait until 8:00 am to start their phone calls concerning their problems and concerns from the last shift. Have any of the complainers ever been in a station when the president has called late in the evening to followup with a member? Do any of the complainers ever offer to move out of the station when the president returns in the evening hours and finds out that he needs to cover at another station? Do any of the complainers realize that even with all of the hours that he spends doing union business, he is still required to maintain his CME's and company drills? I am more than happy to know that My President is willing to spend whatever hours are necessary to complete the tasks that are heaped upon him daily. Now ask yourself this do the complainers know for certain that the new president will ever come close to maintaing these hours? We can either go with factual history, or we can go with a campaign promise. The choice is yours but the gamble could be devastating.

The Ford budget will reduce the salary for all management staff who make over $90,000 annually, including the Mayor. This is in addition to the salary rollback of 2.5% recently enacted by Mayor Baker. City staff making over $100,000 will receive a 10-percent reduction. Staff making $90,000-$100,000 will receive a 5-percent reduction.

I know of no one who was formerly in our union with the initials SK who is an honest man. The SK that we all know is dishonest and dishonorable. He was exposed as a spy for the city's administration during an arbitration hearing for paramedic pay scale compression. His name was redacted from a document that the city's attorney thought to be key to their defense. The only problem with removing his name from the top of the document was the fact that they mistakenly left his name at the bottom of the document. This is but a single example of the life that this man leads on a daily basis. If you are an honest man, you will endeavor to always tell the truth and you'll never feel trepidation from tripping over your own words speaking with 'any' man.
I have a hard time knowing that Human nature's default setting encourages us to always tell the truth yet there are those on this job who have a compromised set of values. They will always default to the "what's best for me" or "what can I get out of this?" mode. This industry is really no different in some ways from any other when you peel back the Human veneer. How many of these individuals do you suppose know the difference between telling a lie and being a liar? There are people on this job that I would never ask an important question of because I know their answer will always be tainted by some special need to be liked, to get ahead, or to be viewed as worthy by the soupe du jour clique.
While I'm on a roll here, I'd like to make an observation about some of the new guys that we have on the job now. The old saying, "with age comes wisdom" couldn't be truer. Each and every one of us needs to reinforce the need to be active in our union of firefighters. I say "union of firefighters" because it's just that. Too many times the word 'union' gets thrown around like it's some kind of inanimate object. It's not! It's you and me working together for a common cause. The single reed is easily broken but when we bundle them together they are unbreakable! To cite an example of an attempt at union bashing; during a recent morning consultation meeting between the union, HR and fire administration, Jim Wimberly got a little defensive about something that was said. His response was to attack us as he threw out that nasty fire letter word - union. He took grief from nearly every side of the table. I personally took umbrage with his comments as he wouldn't know this union of firefighters if it fell on him. How could he possibly? Anyhow, he quickly retreated back into his foxhole in mea culpa fashion when no one came to his defense. He is one guy who's truly out of his element when he can't totally control every aspect of a situation.
This very scenario of union bashing is being played-out in fire stations all over this city. Can any of you imagine what we all have to gain by these acts by individuals against the body? It doesn't work well for "all" of us but apparently it works well for a few. The new guy not having attained enough age or wisdom is a ready-made target for the union and the ne'er do wells, alike. Over the many weeks that the new guys find themselves going through the many evolutions to finally get assigned to a shift, the union gets them for a single morning to place whatever magic spell we have, over them. 3-4 hours of indoctrination and 'presto', instant unionist's. Once out in the companies they can fall prey to the bitter pills. These bright fellows come in many forms but all have the same objective and that's to be subjective. They always point to flaws in the system, how they got screwed, how the union didn't fight hard enough for them, how the union spends money, etc., etc... When you distill it all down, they're all in the middle of a tug-o-war. Like our friend above, if they can't totally control ever aspect of the union, instead of actively working for the changes they believe are warranted, they sit on the periphery and throw invectives and they hold grudges. Again, being subjective not objective. For those who fall prey to the dark side early on, they're down of the union (that would be all of us paying dues) and when asked why, their only recollection is a used one... the recollection of another. They in-fact have probably never been wronged by this union or its leadership. They've chosen simply instead to just get-along with some of their bitter pill station mates and join the flame fest. A better solution might be to take an objective look and ask yourselves "Where have we been?" "Where are we now?" "Where are we going?"

Then he had the gall to tell Chief Large how to answer a question asked of him by a Council member. It was also pointed out in a loud and clear manner that of the 5 probies, 1 has accepted a job elsewhere in the city, 1 will work with at his families business, and the other 3 have app in to other depts. Of these 3, 2 have said no thanks to working in any other capicity for the city the other said he would consider. BTW, did anyone see Mike Wimmers in the audienance? As usual, I saw President Newton and S/T Mott.

Answer: Because he's a shit stirer who's never been to negotiations to find out the truth. The city has turned us down repeatedly telling us that they weren't interested at the present time. Classifying DE just like EMT means more money and more money in your pension.

There is a Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners this Tuesday @ 1830hrs. The meeting is going to be held at the Clearwater 315 Court St. This meeting is very important because St. Pete Beach is going to attempt to keep the County EMS funding for R-23. This directly will reduce the level of service to the citizens! If St. Pete Beach does keep the funding for R-23, three paramedic positions that are set to be cut on Oct. 1st will also not be eliminated!
SO - Let's Recap - KEEP FUNDING = Keep the level of service for the public & Keep 3 Positions!

I also, extend thanks to those who have called and welcomed me back. I am in my last year, and reflecting back on 33 years, I am amazed that this job has taken such a drastic change for the worse. Good riddance Jerry Chalmer's, (I generally do not degrade fellow brothers) but when this pathetic excuse for a human being told me that he did not care if my daughter was having open heart surgery, I would HAVE to accept mandatory overtime.....well what goes around comes around. South Pasadena Fire Dept. fights county over EMS budget gains funding for stand alone rescue. St. Petersburg Fire fights county over EMS budget and loses 3 rescue lieutenants and more. SPFR awards Steve Knight the coveted Fire Officer of the Year honors for losing. Just as the City gave the Finaincial director a bonus for losing only $15 million last year, it is appearent that the big losers working for this city are the workers while those that actually lose the money are hailed as heroes. Can someone that is good with basic math help me figure this mess out?
