We still have no one to cover for training assignments but the Mandatory overtime has been coming regularly. Today 2 underpaid District Chiefs had to be brutely man handled and forced to be away from their loved ones because we STILL wont hold ole Jimmy's feet to the fire and insist that our staffing levels be brought up to an adequete amount of folks to cover for our long termers. There will always be some so they may as well be covered. FMLA, FMLAF, and Military time was never around back in the days that the old timers remember. However it is here and will be long after all of us are gone. Get used to it as it will only get worse in 2016 when the new understaffed R-Days commence.

Add to that the fact that every time we turn around we're bargaining away more rights and benefits and your 'Everyday Hero's' begins to take on a whole different meaning.

Put down the glass of kool aid you got from Dumb and Moronic and listen to what the grownups have to say.
Overtime is, as you obviously believe, a benefit that the membership should be thankful for but if a person doesn't aspire to working it then it should just be ignored. If only it were that simple. Here's the thing. On *this* particular department overtime is an implement used to justify the lack of manpower willing to be employed by the city. In high school terms it means the city won't hire enough people to man the trucks at all times so people must be held over or added to the manpower in order to make it look like there's enough manpower to protect the citizens at all times.
Soon it will be in the contract that all members must work at least 48 hours of overtime each month at their normal hourly rate. They will get that benefit by giving up 48 hours of their vacation time at the beginning of every month and then restore it by working the overtime. This will be promoted as being more time off to be with your family. And you will vote for it.
Meanwhile the fire chief will continue to blow smoke up the ass of the public and get away with blatantly duping anyone who challenges his tactics. You're gonna like it here, kid. Once you realize that there's two sides to everything and what looks like candy can sometimes be snot. Now I know you're new and all bushy tailed and excited. And I know the chief and his two lackeys have told you some glowing lies about things. Be patient. All that will change. Head down, mouth shut, and think for yourself.

If you can just "delay" your event for another 6 hours we will be able to send someone to you soon." 8 hours is not a delay. The citizens and firefighters that rely on Sq 1, Eng 8, Truck 9, Rescue 4, and Eng 7 will all agree. Oh yeah, this "delay" is because of an Officers meeting.

It could be construed that his article, which stated the obvious about Jimmy not having control of the swap time, was instrumental in shining a light on just one of the things that Jimmy was in the dark about. It probably was. But Jimmy was getting his ass handed to him from a different direction. And that weak blurb about swap time was far from instrumental in his demise as fire chief.
Don't be fooled by what looks like support from the TBT. It's not. They're just giving the new Mayor all the rope he needs to hang himself, potentially. The self-appointed watchdogs of distrust and disappointment are already banging on the door at city hall. They don't support the Mayor, they don't support the fire chief, and they damn sure don't support you. And the TBT is right there giving them all the press they can handle. Just give them time. If and when the tides turn and the sun shines on the ass of the firefighter union via a decent pay raise they will be screaming for your head on a pike pole. I don't have much use for reporters who make their bones on the back of those who can't get equal space in which to defend themselves and tell their side without the slanted take of the TBT. After a lifetime of living and working in St. Petersburg I'm no novice about the tactics of the St. Pete. Times that now masquerades as the TBT. New name, nothing's changed.
That being said I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Puente for the lack of professionalism and total disregard for decorum shown to you by the leadership of this Local. At one time in the not so distant past this Local was a place of honor and integrity operated by knowledgeable leadership who knew the processes of tact and honesty. At the present time we are burdened with two elected officials who know nothing of either of those things.
I am honestly offering my apology to you for the treatment you received at the hands of the President and Executive Vice President of this Local. In the past the officers of this Local have always made every effort to maintain a working relationship with the press. Destroying that relationship is NOT the intent nor the desire at this time by the vast majority of members of this Local. In these days and times it's very hard to determine the exact direction of this body but please be assured it isn't in the way one would surmise after being treated so shabbily. Again, please accept my apology and the apology of most all of the members for the way you were treated. That's NOT who we are.

Received via Email 01-19-14 Having heard a couple versions of the "meeting" set up by our executive with TBT, I am both unhappy, embarrassed and let down. If these allegations are indeed true or not, I call on both Michael Blank and Steve Hay to come clean and clear the record. Many do not agree with your leadership philosophy, some do. To coin a popular phrase, "I desire transparent operations of our local." I hear how often Brother Mott is left out of the mix when it comes to what you two want to do.
The last election cycle was not the best I have seen in my 30 years of membership in 747. Yes we landed council members but lost on an opportunity to support the more supportive mayoral candidate, now Mayor. Multiple things were not done as in the past.
It is not too late to make a positive, fair change to this situation. I call for all members to show maturity, respect and character in restoring our Union, to a member based leadership again. My views may not be welcomed by all, but I assure you, I have no personal agenda. I hope for the best for our brothers and sistes. A bright future with benefits deserving of these brave public servants.

It was announced at last weeks union meeting that Abbott and Costello would be meeting with the council members this week. God help us, Maybe Hay will put them on notice and end up threatening them too. Hay is still holding on his belief that we own the council and that the Mayor is nothing in the scope of how the city is run.
TEAM: It is paramount that we maintain a relationship with both. If we are held in high regard by the Mayor, we'll never need to know Council's level of devotion to us because the facts are that on any given day the Mayor is our boss. Come the day the Local and the Mayor can't reach a mutual accord as it pertains to pay, benefits or terms and conditions of employment - we may well find ourselves going to impasse. At that point in time council becomes the boss and informs the Mayor of their desires.
Personlly, we'd rather that the Mayor not believe that he is any less important because we somehow have an 'in' with Council. For Council to actually get a say (a vote) in our matters, we have to go to impasse. It's never good to go to impasse to prove Council's love for us. If we have to go to impasse, either the Mayor is the problem or we are the problem. How are we doing so far?

IT'S MISSING !!! Whether she could reach it is not in contention. As it seems, if the ladder were laying at her feet she couldn't put it on the truck so she just drove off and left it there. The whole thing stinks. She screwed up and there's no defence. But to provide "she's short" as a defence is more asinine than not saying anything at all. You look like a fool to defend this cluster and then remove all doubt by providing a reason. Question: what level of punishment was given to the member for this mistake? "Oral, step one, step two, counseling, time off, fired, what? Isn't this an "oral" reprimand type thing or does the member continuously leave equipemtnt at the scene? If this is a first "offense" type event then what was the proper punishment? Did it exceed it? Is the member a continual screw up or did the chief amass a "mother*******" pile of evidence over a period of time to influence his decision? On the one hand you have the chief running amok delivering punishment and on the other hand you have a dues paying member being defended by two lackeys who are both in th chief's pocket. There is a bus leaving and coming back on the same day, transporting firefighters and police to Tallahassee. We need to be there in overwhelming numbers, in order to show our support and solidarity in the chambers and on the steps of the capital.

The Chiefs love the Chiefs new policy that gives employees time off before the case can even be heard. Monday 10/27/2014 Donnie Estrada will see the whopping amount of $500.00 slip through his fingers while he serves his 20 hour suspension. Sign me up Chief may I have another? I just went through the postings for this past year and found that our members have suffered a collective loss of 500 hours of pay, of course this is only what people post so there could be more that I don't see here. Ironic, but I noticed that for this year the beatings didn't start until February. I guess Chief Jimbo is trying to show the new Mayor that he is tuff on the men and women in his poorly managed fiefdom when he needs to be.
Received via Email 10-26-14 For those of you that are new to SPF&R the policy of serving time off prior to a grievance hearing is NOT new. I received and served my 10 shifts off before the first hearing. It is a way to punish you no matter whether you did anything wrong or not. I am sort of glad that I did serve my time off before because I got a 10 shift PAID VACATION courtesy of the city. I grieved my case all the way to a federal arbitrator. I didn't let a wimp of a President talk me out of it. This all happened 6 years ago this month. As far as I know the decision AGAINST SPF&R and the city still stands.
